Story Time Themes - Grades 3 through 5

Children gather around in costume as part of a Halloween program: one of Lee's specialties!

Programs for grades 3 through 5 target more advanced children by incorporating reading, singing, and acting.

Children get to develop new skills and confidence, and participate in activities geared to their level, guaranteed to appeal to older children as well as parents and teachers, who are encouraged to participate.

A 45-minute workshop ranges in price according to the size of the audience and the number of workshops I do. Contact me or call me for more information.

James Thurber's beautiful story will stimulate your student's imagination and creativity. They will enjoy learning a song much like music of today with a pretty melody and a rhythmical rap section. There are many interesting parts for role playing and they will also engage in creative writing. We might even discover exactly how far away the moon really is and what it is truly made of!

This story supports the fourth and fifth grade curriculum, as it deals with slavery in the South. It is a truly beautiful book in content and artwork. The workshop will include creative writing, public speaking, singing, improvisation, and creating visual artwork. Writing material will be sent ahead of time and students will recite their creations in front of the class. They can choose to write about being the Prince of Night, Giant of the Trees, Dream Queen, Sun Goddess, Sea Queen, Queen of Bees, or the Great Lady of Peace.

Books Alive Advanced Workshop and Scripting

Here Lee discusses a book with the kids

Why read to your students when they can read to you! Choose an advanced picture book with several characters, perhaps Mrs. Toggle's Zipper (listed below) one of the Rugrats books, like in this example (or other cartoon favorites), or any book of your choice and I will put the text into a script form, as if they were in a play.

The parts can also be shared so everyone gets a chance to read. Everyone gets a script so they are reading along when they are not actually reading. They enjoy listening to each other and pay very close attention since they know they wil be reading soon.

Students will enjoy learning an original song and participating in acting exercises that correspond to the story.

Robin Pulver herself thanked me for my "interest and good use of her book." This is an adorable story and can be read and re-enacted for advanced readers or be used for scripting. There are many characters, all of which attempt to relieve Mrs. Toggle of her warm overcoat. Students will learn an original song with a calypso beat Ms. Pulver described as "wonderful - such fun" (click to listen!)!
